What Is a Rashguard? A Guide for BJJ & MMA

A rashguard is a stretchy, close-fitting training top worn for no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, MMA and grappling. It moves with your body and comes in short-sleeve and long-sleeve versions. Choosing one starts with the coverage you prefer, a comfortable fit and the requirements of your training session.

What is a rashguard used for?

In no-gi BJJ and grappling, a rashguard is worn as a training top with shorts or other suitable training bottoms. For MMA sessions, it can also be part of your training kit. Some practitioners wear one beneath a gi; check your academy’s uniform policy before choosing what to wear.

A close fit keeps loose fabric to a minimum as you move through grappling positions. Your rashguard should stay comfortable when you reach, bend and rotate. It is clothing, rather than protective equipment, and does not replace good training hygiene.

Rashguard versus a regular workout shirt

The main difference is fit and construction. A typical loose workout T-shirt hangs away from the body, while a rashguard has a close, stretchy silhouette. Fabric composition and fit vary between products, so check the individual description rather than assuming every training top performs the same way.

Chimpjunkie’s Assault, Guardian and Rampage rashguards use an 82% polyester and 18% spandex blend. Compare sleeve coverage and the product’s size chart when choosing between designs.

Short sleeve or long sleeve?

Short-sleeve rashguards leave more of your arms uncovered. Long-sleeve rashguards cover the arms down to the wrists. Sleeve length is a coverage choice; it does not mean you should automatically buy a larger or smaller size.

Browse short-sleeve rashguards and long-sleeve rashguards, or read our rashguard fit and sizing guide for a side-by-side comparison.

How should a rashguard fit?

Look for a close fit that still allows comfortable movement. Raise your arms, reach forward and bend your elbows when trying it on. Check for uncomfortable pulling around the chest, shoulders and underarms.

Use the size guide on the exact product you want. Check whether the chart describes body measurements or garment measurements before comparing values. Avoid choosing only from your usual T-shirt size. If you are between sizes or unsure, contact Chimpjunkie with the product name and your measurements.

Can you wear a rashguard in competition?

Check your event organiser’s current uniform rules for your division before buying. Colour, sleeve coverage and other requirements can vary. A ranked colourway or product name alone does not confirm eligibility for every event.

How do you wash a rashguard?

Follow the garment’s care label. Wash after training, turn it inside out and use cold water, a gentle cycle and mild detergent. Avoid bleach and fabric softener, and air-dry away from direct sunlight rather than using tumble-dryer heat. If washing has to wait, let it air instead of leaving it damp in your gym bag.
